With the phenomenal increase in the number of blogs since it first began, many web page publishing and syndication service providers are offering blog hosting usually for free.  This allows users to quickly share information such as news, reviews, journals, diaries, photos and of course blogs.  Weblog softwares which consist of a specialized form of content management system are specifically designed for creating and maintaining blogs.

User-hosted software packages are installed by weblog authors to run on their own systems.  Some software packages are offered under a free or open-source software license which allows everyone to its use, often with commercial support contract.  Proprietary software packages are licensed under a commercial license which requires payment of a fee in order to be used.  Developer-hosted software services are operated by the developer with no software installation required for the weblog author.
