Theme developers are highly encouraged to provide installation instructions for their own themes since themes can provide special optional functionality that may require more steps than the basic installation steps.  Users should read through the instructions and follow them.  The theme author should be contacted if the theme does not work even after following the instructions.

3.  How do I know if a particular theme is the right one?

Since there is no such thing as a perfect theme, a design that you enjoy looking at and feel good about is always a good bet.
